Picking up where The Tipping Point leaves off, respected journalist
Lee Daniel Kravetz's Strange Contagion is a provocative look at
both the science and lived experience of social contagion. In 2009,
tragedy struck the town of Palo Alto: A student from the local high
school had died by suicide by stepping in front of an oncoming
train. Grief-stricken, the community mourned what they thought was
an isolated loss. Until, a few weeks later, it happened again. And
again. And again. In six months, the high school lost five students
to suicide at those train tracks. A recent transplant to the
community and a new father himself, Lee Daniel Kravetz's experience
as a science journalist kicked in: what was causing this tragedy?
More important, how was it possible that a suicide cluster could
develop in a community of concerned, aware, hyper-vigilant adults?
The answer? Social contagion. We all know that ideas, emotions, and
actions are communicable-from mirroring someone's posture to
mimicking their speech patterns, we are all driven by unconscious
motivations triggered by our environment. But when just the right
physiological, psychological, and social factors come together, we
get what Kravetz calls a "strange contagion:" a perfect storm of
highly common social viruses that, combined, form a highly volatile
condition. Strange Contagion is simultaneously a moving account of
one community's tragedy and a rigorous investigation of social
phenomenon, as Kravetz draws on research and insights from experts
worldwide to unlock the mystery of how ideas spread, why they take
hold, and offer thoughts on our responsibility to one another as
citizens of a globally and perpetually connected world.

football as well as their journey to their first ever Champions
League final as Pep Guardiola's team battle to secure their place

and exclusive interviews with players, coaches and backroom staff.
This mesmerizing companion book to the award-winning film, The
Butler traces the Civil Rights Movement and explores crucial
moments of twentieth century American history through the eyes of
Eugene Allen-a White House butler who served eight presidents over
the course of thirty-four years. During the presidencies of Harry
Truman to Ronald Reagan, Eugene Allen was a butler in the most
famous of residences: the White House. An African American who came
of age during the era of Jim Crow, Allen served tea and supervised
buffets while also witnessing some of the most momentous decisions
made during the second half of the twentieth century, including
Lyndon B. Johnson's work during the Civil Rights Movement and
Ronald Reagan getting tough on apartheid. But even as Allen
witnessed the Civil Rights legislation develop, his family,
friends, and neighbors were still contending with Jim Crow America.
Timely, "poignant and powerful" (Kirkus Reviews) The Butler also
explores Eugene Allen and his family's background along with the
history of African Americans in Hollywood and also features a
foreword by the film's director Lee Daniels.
The combination of cheap, easily available materials, margin for
error, suitability for amateurs and flexibility in terms of size
and shape, make ferrocement tanks an ideal choice for anyone
looking for long-term water security on a budget, and they work
well in all but the harshest environment. With hands-on experience,
the authors provide a detailed guide to enable confident and safe
construction by anyone interested in building their own ferrocement
tank. Felicity and Daniel share their reasons for choosing these
tanks, how they calculated their water needs and how they
constructed and maintain their tanks that cater for all their
needs. With our weather patterns drastically shifting between
drought and flood due to the climate change, it is vital to have
reserves of water to rely on. Felicity and Daniel self-built their
own house and included water tanks. They achieved water security
for less than the cost of joining the local water network! Whether
you are creating your own off-grid home, or want to reduce your
carbon footprint and reliance on mains water, the ferrocement tank
offers a simple, achievable and robust DIY solution.
Climate change is a key problem of the 21st century. China, as the
largest emitter of greenhouse gases, has committed to stabilize its
current emissions and dramatically increase the share of
electricity production from non-fossil fuels by 2030. However, this
is only a first step: in the longer term, China needs to
aggressively strive to reach a goal of zero-emissions. Through
detailed discussions of electricity pricing, electric vehicle
policies, nuclear energy policies, and renewable energy policies,
this book reviews how near-term climate and energy policies can
affect long-term decarbonization pathways beyond 2030, building the
foundations for decarbonization in advance of its realization.
Focusing primarily on the electricity sector in China - the main
battleground for decarbonization over the next century - it
provides a valuable resource for researchers and policymakers, as
well as energy and climate experts.

A gritty, life-affirming tale of an abused African-American
teenager's struggle to change her life in 1980s Harlem. 16-year-old
Clareece 'Precious' Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) has been abused from an
early age by her now absent father, and is pregnant with his second
child. With a venomous mother Mary (Mo'Nique) who treats her like a
servant and her school life blighted by her illiteracy, Precious
struggles to cope with her seemingly hopeless life. But the offer
of a place in an alternative school and the nurturing of literacy
teacher Ms. Rain (Paula Patton) soon begin to transform the
teenager, offering her a path to a brighter future. Mo'Nique won
the Best Supporting Actress awards at both the 2010 BAFTAs and the
Academy Awards for her portrayal of Mary.
Set in Harlem in 1987, Claireece “Precious” Jones is a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want.
She’s pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother, a poisonously angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically.
School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read nor write. Precious may sometimes be down, but she is never out. Beneath her impassive expression is a watchful, curious young woman with an unshakeable sense that other possibilities exist for her.
Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, Each One/Teach One. Precious doesn’t know the meaning of “alternative,” but her instincts tell her this is the chance she has been waiting for.
So begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.
Having eventually won 2 Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay, Precious was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress in a leading role.

Highly practical eyelid surgery resource informs important
reconstruction decisions and strategies Skin malignancies
frequently affect the periocular area, necessitating excision
followed by eyelid reconstruction. Periocular trauma is also quite
common, and because of the highly complex regional anatomy,
requires expertise for effective reconstruction. Preparation by
ophthalmic plastic surgeons prior to periorbital reconstruction is
often not possible due to the unpredictability of defects left
after Mohs micrographic surgeons clear tumor margins or in cases of
trauma. Eyelid Reconstruction by renowned expert Suzanne Freitag
and esteemed coeditors N. Grace Lee, Daniel Lefebvre, and Michael
Yoon fills a void in the literature. The book provides a quick and
practical ophthalmic plastic surgery guide on how to plan and
perform a full spectrum of periocular reconstruction procedures.
The textbook is a compilation of patient cases and the authors'
vast, richly diverse expertise. The book starts with two chapters
covering complex periorbital anatomy and basic surgical principles,
both of which are critical to performing safe and effective
surgery. The third chapter provides a comprehensive overview of
Mohs surgery in the periorbital area, an important topic given many
defect reconstructions are secondary to Mohs micrographic surgical
excisions. Subsequent chapters, organized by anatomic region,
feature discussion of surgical approaches for reconstructions of
various size and depth defects. The final chapter details eyelid
trauma repair, including lid margin and lacrimal lacerations. Key
Features An essential go-to pre- or peri-operative reference
surgeons can consult quickly as reconstruction cases arise
Practical and concise procedural descriptions accompanied by
numerous high-quality photographs and illustrations enhance
comprehension Chapters dedicated to medial canthus, lower eyelid,
upper eyelid, and lateral canthus reconstruction procedures discuss
special considerations based on underlying anatomy, adnexal
structures, and required functions This is a must-have resource for
residents, fellows, and experienced surgeons in the fields of
ophthalmic plastic surgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, facial
plastic surgery, plastic surgery, dermatology, Mohs surgery, and
maxillofacial surgery. This book includes complimentary access to a

developmental issues among Chinese adolescents in Hong Kong, the
application of Positive Youth Development (PYD) to a large-scale
primary prevention program and the impact of PYD on student
well-being, indexed according to adolescent developmental issue.
Using multiple strategies, it presents the overall constructs and
frameworks supporting P.A.T.H.S. in response to the various
psychosocial needs of Hong Kong's youth. Some of the issues covered
include substance abuse, sexual behavior, internet addiction,
bullying and cyber-bullying. The book argues for the effectiveness
of the school-based program in promoting student well-being in
modern Hong Kong society and will be of interest to undergraduate
and postgraduate students, university instructors, researchers,
social workers, pediatricians, youth workers, educators,
administrators, psychologists, school principals and allied

China.
This critically-commented source edition contains the commercial
directions, merchant diary and naval log of four East India Company
ships, which sailed from London to Canton, China in 1723, as well
as the travelogue of another contemporary trader who sailed from
Ostend. It highlights the roles of cooperation and competition in
shaping the relations between these and other European companies as
well as the everyday lives of European merchants and mariners. The
edition thus sheds new light on the history of the East Indies
trade during the eighteenth century and its role in encouraging
early modern globalization.
